Start Procedures
The standard 3 box start procedures will be used:
At 3 minutes before you start, you will be called into the first box. Be sure to have cleared and check your e-punch prior to this.
At 2 minutes before your start, move into the second box to get your clue descriptions.
At 1 minute before your start, move into the final box. Write your name on the back of your map and prepare to start. Do not look at your map.
At the starting beep, punch the start, look at your map and proceed with your course.
Anyone who misses their assigned start time will be rescheduled by the start team when a spot becomes available. Please avoid missing your assigned time.
White and Yellow course participants will not have assigned start times and will be allowed to study their maps for 2 minutes ahead of their start. All other courses must punch the start before viewing their map.
Anyone shadowing a junior on the White or Yellow courses must have completed their own course first. Shadowing is not allowed on the Orange course.
Whistles are mandatory for the Middle and Long courses and will be available at the start.

The 2026 US Champs will be governed by the OUSA Rules of Competition, A.20.

However, with respect to the UMD campus, there is no embargo for university students, staff, or faculty. Others may visit to attend university events or conduct business on campus. No orienteering activity is permitted, including but not limited to training, testing route choices, using orienteering maps, systematic terrain inspection, or any action intended to gain knowledge relevant to the competition.
